Pico Rivera event to honor memory of a slain six-year-old ‘little cowboy’

Note: Hews Media Group would like to invite the community to participate in this worthwhile event that his being coordinated by former Pico Rivera Mayor Gracie Gallegos Smith.

Dear Friends,

Many of you may remember me as the former Mayor of the City of Pico Rivera, and how my family’s roots in this great city are as long as they are proud.

What you may not know is of a tragedy suffered by my family on December 17, 1987 when my nephew, Filimon “Ganino” Gallegos  at the age of 6, was killed by another child who found a loaded gun. This horrific tragedy caused anguish to my family and it is rare that a day goes by that I don’t think of his little face, his sweet laugh, and noble heart.

Ganino was a happy little boy, with his Grandpa’s “cowboy” style and a smile that would light up a room. The eldest boy of four children, he attended Birney Elementary School. His big sister Yvonne was only 7 at the time and can still feel the impact that his tragic passing had on our family.

This year marks the 25th anniversary that our “Little Cowboy” was laid to rest and Yvonne is determined to turn tragedy into a positive opportunity for other children.

Yvonne, a marathon runner, has been active, raising funds and awareness for cancer research, and is an advocate for physical and mental health for children.

This project brings her all the way down from Northern California to her childhood home in Pico Rivera, to memorialize her little brother and help others along the way. I am very proud of her determination and need your help to support her efforts.

The Inaugural “Cowboy Dash” will be held on December 16th, 2012 at El Rancho High School.

All proceeds will benefit the Pico Rivera Sheriff’s PRIDE Program. This program is a 501(c) that targets at- risk youths in the Pico Rivera community.

A 1 mile walk/run for kids of all ages will ensue, followed by a visit from the infamous Santa Sleigh for all participants. Child participants may have their photo taken with Santa and receive a gift, medal, and bandana.

We are looking for pledges, sponsors, raffle prizes, booth sponsors and anything that will make this day a success. If you are interested in having a booth for your business present, please contact us as soon as possible. We welcome all family friendly entities. You may visit the website for registration and event info at www.cowboydash.comThe tax ID number for the PRIDE program is 261312874

Many blessings for Christmas 2012,

Gracie Gallegos- Smith
