Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives are continuing their investigation into the shooting death of a man in the 20700 block of Alburtis Avenue in Lakewood on New Years Eve.

In a statement released to members of the media on Tuesday afternoon, Sheriff officials pointed out that “it appears that a small gathering of family and friends were standing in the driveway of a home in the 20700 block of Alburtis Avenue in Lakewood on New Year’s Eve when just before 11:20 p.m. a man walked up to the group.”

“Words were exchanged and an argument ensued when gunfire suddenly erupted. A 36-year-old man attending the gathering was struck in the upper torso. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead,” Sergeant Diane Hecht told Los Cerritos Community Newspaper in a statement.

Five additional victims, a woman and four men, who were also in the driveway suffered minor, non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

The suspect is described only as a male Hispanic adult and he fled the location on foot, Hecht told LCCN.
