Cerritos Tennis Club Planning 40th Reunion Celebration

Cerritos Tennis Club Planning 40th Reunion CelebrationBy Brian Hews

The Cerritos Tennis Club has been one of the most active community organizations in the greater Southeast Los Angeles county area for the past 40 years, and a reunion is being planning a huge reunion of past members this summer.

According to Efren Baca, a leader of the successful organization, Cerritos Tennis Club members past and present will be holding a 40th Anniversary Reunion on Saturday, August 16 at Heritage Park located at 18600 Bloomfield Avenue in Cerritos.

“The Cerritos Tennis Club was first formed in 1974 with Chuck Stewart as the first president,” Baca told Hews Media Group-Community Newspaper this week in an interview.

“That first year, we had just a few players but we quickly grew to well over 450 members in a short period of time,” Baca said.

Baca, a longtime resident of Cerritos said that the 1970’s and 80’s were the “Hay-days of tennis, around here.”

During the past four decades, the Cerritos Tennis Open Tournament attracted more than 650 entrees, and sponsored United States Tennis Association Junior Tournaments with over 1,000 entrees.

Some of the past “juniors” to compete here in Cerritos with the Tennis Club have included Michael Chang, Pete Sampras, Venus and Serena Williams, Lindsey Davenport and Tracy Austin.  All of them went on to become some of the world’s best tennis stars.
