SANTE FE SPRINGS/NORWALK – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will begin the three-week demolition of the old Carmenita Road Bridge above the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) on Friday, July 10. The demolition will require the full closure of north- and southbound I-5 nightly between Rosecrans Avenue and Valley View Avenue.
The closure times are as follows:
Monday through Thursday: Midnight to 5 a.m.
Friday through Saturday: 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The westbound SR-91 connector to northbound I-5 and the southbound I-605 connector to southbound I-5 will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Closures are subject to change. Signed detours will be in place.
Caltrans switched traffic from the existing, two-lane Carmenita Road Bridge to the new 10-lane Camenita Road Bridge on Friday, July 3. Until the new ramps are constructed and connected to the new bridge, only four-lanes (two-lanes in each direction) will be accessible.
The Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) Carmenita Road Interchange Project, in the cities of Santa Fe Springs and Norwalk will replace and reconstruct the existing two-lane overcrossing with a 10-lane (five lanes in each direction) structure. The project will reconfigure the on- and off-ramps, and will realign the following frontage roads: Firestone Boulevard, Freeway Drive, Carmenita Road, Arctic Circle, Molette Street and Excelsior Drive.
The project will also widen I-5 from Alondra Boulevard to Shoemaker Avenue by adding one High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) or car pool lane, and one general purpose lane in each direction, as well as widen the shoulder and construct a median barrier.
