Power Restored in Montebello

MONTEBELLO (CNS) - A power outage in Montebello left more than 1,000 residents in the dark, but power was restored to all but about 200 customers this morning, Southern California Edison said. About 7 p. m. Sunday, a transformer blew in the 1700 block of Germain Drive, causing a nearby palm tree to catch fire, according to the Montebello Police Department. The fire spread and caused other transformers to explode, police said. At first, 1,121 customers were without power but Southern California Edison crews restored power to more than 900 customers by 11 p. m. and it expected to have power fully restored by 10 a. m. today, according to its website. Extreme heat and weather conditions were cited as reasons for equipment failures leading to power outages in other communities, including Long Beach, Norwalk, Lomita and Huntington Park. Power was expected to be restored throughout today, Edison said.
