Deputies Kill Man in Norwalk Who Pointed a Weapon at Them

NORWALK (CNS) - Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a young man who pointed a weapon at them in Norwalk and arrested a second man who did the same, authorities said today.

The deputy-involved shooting occurred in the area of Imperial Highway and Pioneer Boulevard at around 6:30 p. m. Tuesday, said deputies Kelvin Moody and Tina Schrader.

Both suspects allegedly pointed handguns at the deputies before the shooting took place, and two handguns were recovered at the scene, the sheriff's department reported. The fatally wounded man was 18 and from Whittier, according to the coroner's office.

His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives. He died at the scene. The other suspect, whose name also was not immediately released, was taken into custody.

The sheriff's department did not immediately say what prompted the confrontation between the two men and the deputies.

The shooting was being investigated by a team from the Justice System Integrity Division of the L. A. County District Attorney's Office, the sheriff's Homicide and Internal Affairs Bureau, and the Office of the County Inspector General.
