Two Men Arrested in Shooting of Downey Teenager Nick Cubas

Two men have been arrested in connection with the  shooting of a Downey teenager earlier this month in Long Beach, authorities said.

Jerome Rueben Ortega, a 19-year-old from Lakewood, was arrested earlier this month, and Edgar Miguel Espinoza, an 18-year-old resident from Downey, was arrested this past Thursday in San Diego,

Investigators believe that the two were involved in the murder of Nick Cubas, a 19-year-old Downey resident.

Cubas’ body was found around 6:15 a. m. on Aug. 4 near the San Gabriel River and Willow Street, according to police.

Police declined to say if they suspect Ortega and Espinoza acted alone or if anyone else was involved in the killing. Espinoza was booked on suspicion of murder in Long Beach Jail where he’s being held without bail, police said. Ortega is being held in L. A. County Men’s Jail without bail.

The Los Angeles County District Attorneys’ Office charged him Aug. 9 with one count each of special circumstances murder, kidnapping to commit robbery, carjacking, second-degree robbery and shooting at an occupied vehicle.
