Buena Park, Calif. – The City Council held its reorganization at the recent meeting, selecting new Mayor Elizabeth A. Swift and Mayor Pro Tem Virginia Vaughn.
Annually, the City Council elects one of its members to serve as Mayor and another to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore. The Mayor is the Presiding Officer at City Council meetings. Additionally, he or she makes committee assignments and represents the City at official functions. The Mayor Pro Tempore assumes the duties of the Mayor in his or her absence.
Elizabeth A. Swift was born in Buena Park, where she has remained her entire life to raise her family and volunteer in the community. She earned her Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California. She taught several subjects and received many accolades in 15 years with Buena Park High School. Swift was first elected as a member of the City Council in 2010, and served as Mayor from December 11, 2012 to December 10, 2013. While in office, she proposed a list of Core Values to be exemplified by City Staff and Commissions, proposed the establishment of the current Education Committee to improve communication and cooperation between the City and its seven school districts, organized “Buena Park Goes to College!”, advanced fiscal responsibility and much more.
