Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation regarding the Deputy Involved Shooting which occurred Monday, September 17, 2012.Investigators have learned that a Sheriff’s deputy responded to the location regarding a family disturbance call at a trailer park in the 16600 Block of Downey Avenue, Paramount.
When the deputy arrived at the location, the reporting party told the deputy that his grandson was acting “crazy.”
The deputy contacted the grandson (suspect), a 27-year old male, inside the trailer. The suspect told the deputy, “I’m not going back to jail” and began fighting with the deputy. The fight went on for several minutes, during which time the suspect hit the deputy on the head and attempted to choke him.
The fight became life threatening when the suspect attempted to take away the deputy’s gun. The deputy was able to regain control of his gun and, fearing for his life, he was able to shoot the suspect.
Additional deputies arrived at the location and they were able to take the suspect into custody.
Paramedics arrived at the location and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.
The deputy was transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries he sustained during the fight with the suspect.
The deputy was treated for injuries to his head, shoulder and knee. He was then released from the hospital.
The investigation is on going. The name of the victim or the injured deputy has not been disclosed or made public by law enforcement official. Several streets have been blocked off in the area around the incident.
Whenever an Officer Involved Shooting occurs and it results in the wounding of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney in addition to investigations by Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene and have full access to the facts know to the Sheriff’s Department throughout every phase of these investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee.
