Whittier Councilman Norbak resigns citing position with trash hauler

By Brian Hews
Whittier Councilman Greg Nordbak abruptly resigned from office Tuesday night citing his professional obligations as an executive with a waste disposal company.
Nordbak, 60, announced his decision to leave the Whittier City Council due to “increased responsibilities” with his job at Republic Services.
“They have recently offered me an opportunity to be given additional responsibilities in the company that would require me to have increased contact with various cities, city council members and staff in this general area,” he said.
On the cities website Wednesday afternoon, a notice of Nordbak’s resignation was listed as well information about how the city council will be replacing him.
“The City Council will be accepting applications to fill Greg Nordbak’s seat on the City Council. Mr. Nordbak resigned, effective on July 11th, for personal and business reasons,” the statement read.
Whittier City Charter mandates that his unexpired term be filled by appointment, instead of holding a special election.
Residents who want to fill the vacancy must be a registered voter in Whittier, and applications will be available on July 25th.
At the City Council meeting of July 24, 2012, the full appointment process will be determined.
